President Bush: Rescue Our Families

The Rescue Our Families campaign has had success in other countries, most notably Canada, due in large part to the support of government officials at the highest levels. Our own Congress has unanimously condemned the persecution and resolved that the US government should use "every appropriate public and private forum" to free all Falun Gong practitioners in China. The letter below calls on President Bush to speak out on behalf of family members of US citizens and permanent residents, free them from incarceration and help to reunite them with their families.

Dear Mr. President,,

I know that you are well-aware of the terrible situation involving the persecution of Falun Gong. Persecution can be an abstract thing that affects somebody else, until it hits your home, and your mother, father, sister, brother, wife or daughter is gone. Such is the nightmare that American families, and families all over the world, are living with every day.

Recently, twenty-two American families of Falun Gong practitioners have stepped forward to initiate a nationwide campaign to rescue their immediate family members, who are being illegally held and tortured in Chinese prisons and labor camps. We ask for the full support of your administration to help them.

We know it is possible to have success in freeing individuals, because after the beginning of an international rescue campaign, four people have been freed. So we have hope. However, these efforts were successful largely because of pressure placed on Chinese authorities from the highest levels of the Canadian and Irish governments, and a concerted international effort on their behalf. It is astonishing that our country, which prides itself on being the world’s greatest democracy, has to this date achieved only Congress’ unanimous condemnation of the persecution. We have so far failed to help American families still living every day with the nightmare and uncertainty of wondering if they will ever see their loved ones again.

Our Representatives reflect the sentiments of their constituents, but a resolution alone will not be enough. I urge you to prevail upon the Chinese authorities to free the family members of our citizens and all Falun Gong adherents detained in China.

A nation and its leaders will be judged by history on the merits of their commitment to uphold their country's freedoms. America must take a stand against terrorism wherever it festers, and protect the sanctity of the family, as that is the fabric of our society.
