On March 15, Jia Jia, a Chinese defector, was released after his recent detention by Indonesian police. Jia Jia expressed content over the Indonesian government’s decision to support his right to freedom. He also expressed appreciation for the worldwide support and appeal for his release. The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) latest attempt at repatriation has once again failed.

Jia Jia, the former Secretary General of the Science and Technology Association of Shanxi Province, announced his withdrawal from the CCP last October during a tour in Taiwan. Since then, he has been visiting Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia using a traveling visa to testify to the real phenomenon of people quitting the CCP in mainland China.

On March 8, moments before holding a press conference on Bali Island, Indonesian police, pressured by the Chinese communist regime, took Jia Jia away for inquiry and detention at a police station.

The CCP’s Unsuccessful Pressures to Repatriatie Jia

Since renouncing his affiliation with the CCP, Jia Jia has been followed by spies hired by the CCP. The CCP has been pressuring the countries that Jia Jia visited to repatriate him. Having evaded all the CCP’s efforts, Jia Jia believes the gods have been helping him at critical times.

The Indonesian police first claimed that Jia Jia lacked the correct authorization to hold the press conference, but later claimed that he violated visa bylaws, according to Agung Dwi Astika, SH, chairman of the Legal Aid Foundation Bail Branch and a human rights attorney. If Jia Jia violated visa bylaws, he should have been reported to the immigration office, rather than being detained.

Local and Worldwide Support Helped Release Jia Jia

During Jia Jia’s detention, individuals and organizations across the world supported him and condemned the Chinese communist regime’s actions. Over 70 international civilian groups wrote to the Indonesian president to request his release. People across the world have also been declaring support for Jia Jia online.

Local resident, Mangty, praised Jia Jia as a good and brave person who hopes to tell other countries the truth of the CCP. Mangty expressed that the police had no right to take Jia Jia away because he didn’t commit any crimes, thus is not a criminal.

On March 13, representatives from Indonesian Bar Association (Ikadin), Indonesian Police Watch, Legal Aid Foundation, Warma Dewa University and local human rights organizations met on Bali Island to rally support for Jia Jia.

The Global Service Center of Quitting the CCP also actively campaigned for Jia Jia’s release. Lin Shuhui, spokesman of the Taiwan branch, said that many people from mainland China are concerned about Jia Jia. Lin said that Jia Jia’s safety is a form of hope and confidence for the Chinese people, and hoped that people worldwide will help Jia Jia together.

On March 11, Jia Kuo, Jia Jia’s son who now lives in New Zealand, called on people in China and overseas for help. Within three hours they had collected more than 1,500 signatures.

After his release, Jia Jia expressed appreciation for the crucial role that international support, especially from groups in Indonesia, played in his release.
