In China, the Communist Party’s decade-long persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice has resulted in thousands of deaths in labor camps and detention centers. After one Falun Gong practitioner died in a labor camp with mysterious injuries, his family members began to search for the truth. Now, they have become targets for persecution themselves.
In central China, 66-year-old Chongqing resident Jiang Xijing died suddenly on January 28 this year. He had been sent to a so-called “re-education through labor” camp for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual practice persecuted by the communist regime.
The official account says Jiang died from a heart attack. But an autopsy report shows that he suffered three broken ribs. Family members also saw numerous injury marks on his body. Jiang’s body was cremated days later without his family’s permission.
Since his death, Jiang’s children have been pursued by authorities who are trying to silence their demands for justice.
“The public security office calls me all day long and monitors me all the time. My cell phone and home phone are both being monitored. Even my father-in-law has received threatening phone calls. We are living with the threat of terror.”
In May, two lawyers hired by Jiang’s eldest daughter were beaten and detained by Chongqing police. A month later, she herself was kidnapped—and her whereabouts are still unknown.
Now Chongqing officials’ relentless pursuit has reached Jiang’s youngest daughter in Shanghai. On Monday, while trying to board a plane to Beijing, Shanghai public security officials stopped her. Her Shanghai home has now been placed under police surveillance.
