Wang Xiuqing and her youngest daughter, Qin Hailong, from Yichun, were released from Harbin City Qianjin RTL Camp in Heilongjiang province on 13 April 2013. They had served their 18-month RTL terms in full, during which both were tortured and otherwise ill-treated. Qin Hailong has recounted, for example, being beaten and dragged on the rough ground. The food she was given was of such poor nutritional quality that her health suffered, and after eight months in RTL she stopped menstruating.
They had been detained while they were demanding an investigation into the death of Qin Yueming, Wang Xiuqing’s husband, who died in Jiamusi prison. According to the authorities, Qin Yueming died of a heart attack but his family says they found his body covered with bruises and there was blood coming from his nose. Wang Xiuqing and her daughters have said that they will continue to pursue justice for their family following their release.
Amnesty International will continue to monitor the situation of Wang Xiuqing and her family and will take further action as appropriate.
