The award was founded in 2018 to highlight the work of individuals and groups who have been instrumental in raising awareness about the persecution of Falun Gong and bringing about its end. Previous winners include David Matas and David Kilgour, who brought to light the fact that Falun Gong practitioners imprisoned in China are being killed for their organs; Chinese lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who endured severe persecution by the Chinese Communist Party partially due to his work on behalf of Falun Gong practitioners, and The International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China (ETAC).
