Korea Shen Yun Cancellation the Latest Symptom of Chinese Censorship
Thousands of showgoers in Busan, South Korea were left out in the cold after Chinese censors bullied a major local theater to cancel a run of performances by the popular Shen Yun Performing Arts.
Shen Yun, based in New York, tells ancient and modern stories of Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance and music. It has been well received by the public since it began touring worldwide in 2006. Yet, because it depicts stories involving Falun Gong practitioners persecuted by the Chinese regime, it has become the target of censorship attempts from the Chinese Communist Party.
The Busan case was taken to court where it was revealed that the Chinese Consulate sent at least two letters to the owners of the theater, seeking cancellation of the performances. Using a standard ploy, the consulate threatened economic retaliation and the loss of “friendly ties,” should the shows take place.
By now the events are familiar.
Shen Yun emcee Leeshai Lemish published a partial list of incidents on his blog, including threats to theaters, threats to performers, and economic bullying—over 60 cases to date. He describes the events and circumstances regarding the recent cancellation in a video report.
Taken all together, cancellations across four continents represent the Chinese regime’s determination in keeping the international community blind of its persecution of Falun Gong practitioners—and its willingness to use threats and deception to do so.
